Edrington – Bottling Plant

Edrington – cabling and controlling the world’s fastest whisky bottling line

Renowned for crafting some of the world’s best-loved Scotch whiskies – such as The Macallan, The Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark and Highland Park – Edrington Group is a Scottish company with a global reputation. When Elite Controls approached us to partner with them on a new control system for Edrington’s Glasgow bottling plant, we didn’t hesitate. This is the fastest whisky bottling line in the world – filling, labelling and packing up to ten bottles a second.

The client need

The new control system involved a major re-cabling exercise to the power, control and instrumentation, and pneumatic installations.

The NES response

We re-cabled motors and instruments to a new motor control centre area, and installed new programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and input/output (IO) panels, as well as Profibus process automation (PA) networks. Cabling was also required for new intrinsically safe instrumentation. Finally, we provided all the containment for the field cabling, which was a major project in itself.

The client benefits

We finished ahead of schedule in a challenging environment. The NES onsite team preinstalled the control system alongside normal operations. Commissioning and changeover were successfully completed during the scheduled Christmas downtime. “We have been delighted with the systematic and thorough approach taken by NES, with works completed to a high standard,” said Edrington Project Manager, Rachael Walters. They were also particularly impressed with our approach to safety.
