Bairds Malt

Bairds Malt – using thermal imaging to reduce outages and unplanned shutdowns

Bairds Malt is a global supplier of high quality malt products to the brewing and distilling industries. Around 20% of their production comes from Inverness – making them the preferred supplier for many distilleries in Speyside and Morayshire. Bairds’ insurance demands a thermography survey every five years. The site runs 24/7 for most of the year, with only a limited annual shutdown for maintenance.

The client need

Bairds Malt asked us to conduct their survey. The thermal survey helps to identify potential problems before they become serious electrical faults. Any potential problems can be remedied during planned shutdowns, avoiding any loss of production – or immediately if the problems pose an imminent threat. The surveys also help maintenance teams to focus on the key risks to plant operations.

The NES response

We carried out a full thermal image survey of the operational plant. This involved taking thermal and normal photographic images of all types of electrical equipment – including panels, distribution boards and other equipment. Where possible, we also recorded electrical current readings to help better interpret the thermal analysis results.

The client benefits

We identified some equipment items that were showing signs of excess heat, and checked that this wasn’t simply due to overloading. The details of our findings and recommendations were included in a report, which the onsite maintenance team used to target the potential fault items during planned shutdown. There was no loss of production or revenue, and best use was made of the limited maintenance resources.
